General surgery

General surgery is a medical discipline that focuses on intraabdominal benign and malignant diseases diagnostics and treatment, hernia surgery, skin and soft tissue malignant and benign tumors surgery, thyroid surgery and bariatric surgery. Skin and soft tissue tumors surgical treatment can often be performed with a local anesthesia, most other procedures general anesthesia is used. General surgeon also performs gastrointestinal tract endoscopy –gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Removal of a skin or soft tissue tumor

Removal of a skin or soft tissue tumor is one of the most often performed minor surgeries in general surgery, it includes: the removal of skin malignant and benign tumors, atheroma’s (dermal cyst) and lipomas (benign tumor composed of adipose tissue). These procedures are mostly done under local anesthesia and the patient is able to go home afterwards.

Groin (Inguinal) Hernia

Inguinal Hernia occurs in the abdomen near the groin area, they cause bulges in the pubic or groin area and often causes sharp pain or discomfort in the groin. Inguinal hernia is associated with overweight or lifting heavy weights. Surgery is the primary treatment for inguinal hernia. If hernia is not operated there is a risk of strangulated inguinal hernia and this will require emergency medical surgery. During the surgery the surgeon will make a 10 cm incision in the groin to open the inguinal canal, surgeon then moves the hernia back into abdomen and the area of muscle weakness is then reinforced with a permanent mesh. This method of hernia plastics is called tension free plastics and this method has a remarkably low hernia reoccurrence rate. Usually the surgery last about an hour and the patient will be able to go home the same night.

Umbilical Hernia

Umbilical hernia creates a bulge near the navel and is often accompanied by pain and discomfort. Risk factors for umbilical hernia are lifting heavy weights, being overweight and also pregnancy. It can only be repaired surgically. Depending on the size of the hernia surgeon might decide to use a mesh to prepare the hernia .Surgery usually lasts an hour and is performed under general anesthesia. Smaller hernia surgeries that do not require mesh can be performed under local anesthesia. Patient can go home the same night.

Thyroid gland removal

Main reasons for thyroid gland partial or entire removal are usually: a tumor or a suspected tumor, hyperthyroidism, benign cysts or nodules in a thyroid gland, which put pressure on an airway or esophagus. Surgery is performed through a small horizontal incision in the front of the neck. The wound is closed using subcuticular absorbable sutures. The method will leave a better cosmetic appearance of the scar and you do not need to remove sutures. Surgery is always done under general anesthesia. Usually it will last up to 1,5h and patient will be discharged the same night.

Gallstone disease

Gallstone disease is a common disease, main symptom is biliary colic an abdominal pain usually in upper right or center abdomen that is usually aggravated by meals. Gallstones can be asymptomatic for years but having them is always a health risk. In some cases stones may cause a cholecystitis that needs an emergency surgery. Worst cases it can cause bile duct infection and pancreatitis. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the gallbladder and stones will be removed laparoscopically. Usually the surgery will last up to 1h and the patient will be discharged the same night.
