Gastroenterologists deal with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of digestive disorders. Gastroenterology involves the study of the normal function as well as diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver.
Gastroenterologists receive patients with stomach aches, heartburn, unusual weight loss, exhaustion, abnormal stomach activity, blood in stool.
We also receive patients, who wish to test themselves for viral hepatitis, lactose or gluten intolerance or acquire additional information about endoscopic examinations of the gastrointestinal tract.
Diagnosis is based on a thorough conversation with the patient, physical examination, analyses and endoscopic and/or radiological examinations. When conversing with the patient, we are interested in the nature of the problem and when it appeared, other related as well as previously experienced diseases, and medications that the patient uses, including food supplements. When examining the patient, we evaluate their general condition, check for skin signs and rashes, as well as enlarged organs or painful areas in the stomach. Blood and stool samples are very helpful in clarifying diagnoses, for example additional tests are essential in the diagnosis of liver disease. Blood and stool tests also reveal if endoscopic and/or radiological tests are necessary.
